About Us

Hi! We're Rio and Shann Staggs! 

We met in a small town in Texas when we were both in high-school. Shortly after graduation, we decided to move out to the high desert in New Mexico, in search of a life outside the norm. 

We had a lot of adventures and life experiences in our time in New Mexico. We lived off grid, meaning we used solar power, water catchment, and often did not have indoor plumbing. We learned to get by with very little and to appreciate the earth for what it had to offer. 

We started selling kandi jewelry and pottery made by Rio's dad out by the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. It was here that Shann found his love of crystals through other vendors and friends. Little did we know, this would start a life long obsession with rock hounding. 

Our time in New Mexico also gave us space to connect with both the outdoors and with our spiritual sides. We explored metaphysics, tarot, magick, and more. 

We both found a love of art in different forms. Shann attended the culinary arts program and worked his way up the ladder in a variety of restaurants in Taos. Rio continued her love of photography and found a new passion for oil painting. We graduated from The University of New Mexico together in 2018. 

While we wouldn't trade the lessons and passions we found in New Mexico, we decided we were ready for a new chapter in our lives and new opportunities. Later that year, we packed up and moved to Austin, Texas, where Shann got a job at a restaurant exclusively serving wild game. 

We unexpectedly landed an opportunity to work in support roles for a big tech company. We've since climbed the ladder in our careers, with Shann working as a Program Manager and Rio as a Project Lead. This also allowed us to meet some of the best friends we'll ever have, many of whom have started tagging along for some of our outdoorsy adventures. 

While life in the city gave us many wonderful opportunities, we felt disconnected from our roots of being nature loving, off grid living folks. We began taking yearly trips to Arkansas to go quartz crystal mining, with our crew growing every year.

We kept and shared a ton of the beautiful crystals we mined, but we definitely had excess. We decided to start selling them on Etsy along with other rocks, crystals, and minerals Shann had collected over the years. Staggs Minerals was born! 

In 2022 we got married after 14 years together, started traveling more, and learning to love getting outside of our comfort zones. We recently adopted a shelter rescue, a Pit-bull mix named Triton, and bought a Kingdom Camping Adventure Pro Mini camper. We're still living in Austin, and hope to start doing some in-person markets along with the launch of our own online store!
